What is Hair for Hats?
Hair for Hats is a small business, providing human hair hat wigs as a comfortable alternative to full wigs for people who want to hide hairloss under hats, beanies, and scarves from chemotherapy and alopecia.
What are the benefits of Hair for Hats?
- Natural: human hair has a natural look and feel, with the ability to style it just like your own hair - in contrast to synthetic hair that has a shiny/fake appearance and cannot be heated.
- Comfort: because there’s no hair on your scalp, Hair for Hats avoids that horrible scratchy feeling of a full wig, and leaves your head cool, feeling like you are not wearing a wig at all.
- Affordable: significantly more affordable than full human hair wigs, while still providing the benefits of real human hair.
- Easy: our hat wigs do not require the notorious maintenance of a full human hair wig.
- Versatile: most “hats with hair” attach synthetic hair to a single hat. In contrast, you can wear our hairpiece under a wide range of hats and beanies you already own or can borrow.

How do I wear a Hair for Hats hairpiece?
It’s as easy as putting on a headband—except this one has hair attached!

Where do you get your hair?
Our hat wigs are made from 100% human hair, ethically sourced from hair donated by Australians through Sustainable Salons Australia.
What other materials are used?
The hair is attached to a velcro strip, which attaches to a soft cotton headband/
Which style is right for me?
- Front Piece: Ideal if you like a tied-up look that mimics hair tucked under your hat, or if you have short hair, bangs or a side fringe.
- Back Piece: Offers a longer hair look. Best for those who prefer wearing your hair out past your shoulders or in a low ponytail.
- Halo (Front & Back Combined): A fuller coverage option around the full circumference, that remains lightweight and comfortable.

Absolutely! Send us a photo of your previous hair or preferred shade, and we’ll recommend the best match. We also have a detailed Colour Guide with photos in different lighting conditions.

Can I customize my hairpiece?
Since our products are made from real hair, they can be cut, styled, and even coloured. If you’d like a custom cut, we recommend taking it to your hairdresser so that they can customise it to your specific needs and face.
Do you offer different hairstyles or textures?
Our range includes a front and back piece, which are generally straight or with a slight wave. These can be styled (including with heating wands to straighten or curl), dyed or cut, to your preference, and combined into a halo with one of each piece. There are some variations between hairpieces, as we work with the hair that is donated to us.
Please contact us if you have any special requests e.g. for wavier or straighter hair. Occasionally, we list one-off variations (including shorter, longer, or curly pieces) on our Etsy store.
What is the difference between Front and Back Pieces?
- Front Piece: Designed to wear the hair falling from the forehead, swept to the side to frame your face. Can be cut (by a hairdresser) to your perfect bangs, and with enough hair to tucked it in for a few wisps coming out the back.
- Back Piece: This mid-to-longer length hairpiece is twice the volume of hair as the front piece for a thicker mane of hair around your shoulders and back. It has the width around the circumference to cover the sides of your head as well.
- Halo: combines one front and back piece to create a halo for full coverage.
Can I wear the pieces separately if I buy a halo?
Yes! The halo consists of two separate pieces that attach with Velcro, making it easy to wear them together or separately. This flexibility allows you to adjust your look for different hats or comfort levels.
Can I get a thicker hairpiece?
If you prefer more volume, you can purchase an additional back piece to create a fuller look. Two back pieces can be layered for extra thickness.
Do you have any extra long hairpieces?
Occasionally we receive donations of extra long hair, and so sometimes we have longer pieces in our stock. Occasionally we list these one-off hairpieces on Etsy, and sometimes we happen to have a few in stock without advertising them.
Please contact us and let us know your desired colour and style (front piece, back piece or halo), and we will let you know what is available.
Do you have any shorter hairpieces?
The front piece can easily be trimmed for a shorter fringe / ‘bangs’ at the front. Taking your hairpiece to a hairdresser is the best way for this be shaped to your exact needs. We do have some front pieces that have been pre-cut into shorter pieces, and can custom-style some as well. Please email us with any requests, ideally with a photo of your desired style so we can choose or tweak to match it as best as we can.
What halo do you recommend for re-creating a short pixie or bob?
You can re-create a “bixie” cut (bob meets pixie) by getting a standard halo (with the extra thickness at the back) or combining two front pieces (for less hair at the back), and take this to a hairdresser to have it trimmed exactly to your style needs.
Another option is to couple a pre-cut short fringe of hair at the back with a front piece side fringe, attached to one headband as a “bixie” halo. If you would like to order a pre-made “bixie”, please contact us with a photo of your desired style, and we will do our best to meet your needs and provide a discount code (as the double front piece halo is a little cheaper than a halo made from a front and back piece).
Can I use my own hair to create a hat wig?
We don’t offer a customised wig making service, but your local wig maker may be able to do this (albeit at a much higher cost).
Care Instructions
How often do I need to wash my hat wig?
Our hairpieces are very low maintenance, unlike the notorious work involved in maintaining a regular human hair wig. This is because the hair isn’t on the scalp, so it doesn’t absorb scalp oils. Washing therefore isn’t needed so often, approximately once a month (or even every second month) is sufficient.
How do I wash my Hair for Hats wig piece?
- Remove the hair section from the headband (with Velcro attachments).
- Gently hand-wash the hair using baby shampoo, rinse well, and lay on a towel to dry.
- You can also dry it with a hair dryer, while noting this can be harder on the hair (as it is for all hair).
- Handwash or machine-wash the headband and hang out to dry.
Can I curl or dye my hairpiece?
Yes! Since it’s made from real human hair, you can use heating wands to curl or straighten the hair. You can also dye it—it’s just like your own hair.

We currently ship to selected countries where we can provide reliable tracked delivery. If your country is not available at checkout, please contact us and we will let you know if delivery is possible.
How long does shipping take?
Orders are generally dispatched within 1–2 business days. Delivery times vary by destination, approximately 1-3 business days within Australia, and approximately 7-10 business days to most countries in the world. See our Shipping & Delivery page for estimated delivery times.
Can I return my order?
Yes. Eligible items can generally be returned within 30 days. Please see our Returns & Refunds page for full conditions.
Do I need to sign for delivery?
By default, packages are sent with no signature required for convenience. If you’d prefer a signed delivery, please let us know when placing your order.
I haven't received my package, what should I do?
You should receive your package within two weeks of receiving the tracking number. If you have not received your item in that time, please: (1) check the tracking number in your national post tracking system; (2) call or visit your local post office; and (3) if you would like assistance please contact us at support@hairforhats.com.
What is your return and exchange policy?
We understand that purchasing personal items online can be challenging, especially during hair loss. We accept returns within 30 days of delivery, no questions asked. For more details see our Return & Exchange Policy.
How do I check the status of my order?
When your order has shipped, you will receive an email notification from us which will include a tracking number you can use to check its status. Please allow 48 hours for the tracking information to become available.

What are the best hats to wear with my Hair for Hats wig?
- Beanies: The perfect winter option.
- Sun hats: Ideal for summer and out in the sunshine. Opt for hats with depth for optimal coverage and comfort.
- Fashion hats: Newsboy hats, Bucket hats, Baker Boy hats, and more are ideal for cafes and shops.
- Soft bamboo hats: Comfortable everyday hat for in your home; pop a scarf or headband on top for a great office or evening look.
- Baseball caps: The “39Thirty” cap style is without a ponytail hole work best, and if you wear your hairpiece with a ponytail hole then position the headband above the opening. Opt for larger sizes to provide space for the headband.

Do you offer promotions or discounts?
We run our business at bare minimum to always keep our prices as low as possible, and so we do not run promotions or discounts. We can, however, offer a discount for return customers to complete their halo, or for discontinued colours and designs - please contact us for details.
